About the event

This concert aims to depict Amenabar’s journey as an eighteen-year-old student at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki to a present-day PhD candidate at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In the former, focus was put on performing both transcriptions and music originally written for the classical accordion, and as such, the pieces by Kaipainen and Pachelbel denote this. In the latter, the artist has collaborated with nine composers and created ten pieces -including the works by Bousted, Fox and Perivolaris- for the self-designed Quarter-Tone Accordion. The event will conclude with a world première of Kujala’s L’eaurelle, a piece for the quarter-tone accordion written by one of Lore’s former teachers in Finland, which unites inevitably the two above-mentioned currencies that have given identity to her musicianship.

The Quarter-Tone Accordion is an instrument designed by Amenabar, wherein quarter tones are produced in both the right and left-hand manuals. The range and timbral possibilities of this instrument are expanded through the use of fifteen registers on the right manual and seven on the left manual, resulting in a sounding range of E-2 to B-quarter-sharp-6 in the right hand and E-1 to D-quarter-sharp-6 in the left. In her PhD studies, the artist is exploring ‘what’ the instrument ‘is’ through the commissioning of ten collaborative pieces, eight of these collaborations are collected in her debut CD that will be released in September 2023.
